District Revises Calendar to Make Up Snow Days

On Tuesday, February 7 at the Pendleton School District Board of Directors meeting, members voted to revise the school calendar, adding five days of instruction to the end of the school year. This is to make up for the eight snow days the district has incurred.

The last day of school for students K-11 will be June 15 instead of June 8. The last day for seniors is June 2, and seniors only will attend school on April 13, a parent-teacher conference day.

Results of a staff/community survey indicated that most survey respondents chose options of eliminating Monday late starts as their number one choices. However, the district and board determined that using that Professional Learning Community (PLC) time on Mondays would not add up to the needed instructional hours.

Superintendent Andy Kovach also said that several options in the survey required additional spending beyond the district budget in order to work, so they were not chosen. “This was an extremely difficult decision. In making the decision the Pendleton School Board repeatedly sought input from all stakeholders and worked overtime to explore every possible option,” Kovach said.

The school board also voted to apply for an Oregon Department of Education waiver to count 14 hours of inclement weather time as instructional hours. This would get Pendleton High School seniors above the threshold for required instructional hours.

Kovach said that now the decision has been made, “I ask students, families and staff to prepare for and use the additional five days as effectively as possible, and do our best to make this work for our students.”

Here is the Revised Calendar.
