Much to celebrate in graduation rates

On Thursday, January 25, 2018, the Oregon Department of Education released the graduation cohort and dropout data for all public school districts in Oregon.  The Pendleton School District results are very strong with specific areas needing improvement.

The four-year cohort graduation rates are calculated by following students from the fall of their first year in high school to the end of their fourth year.  This tells us the percentage of those students who graduated within four years.  This year’s four-year cohort is made up of the students who first entered high school in the fall of 2013.  The Pendleton School District graduation rates represent a combination of all students who attended Pendleton High School, Hawthorne High School and Nixyaawii Community School.

The Pendleton School District four-year cohort rate is 82.98%.  This slightly down from 83.9% a year ago; however the five-year completer rate is 91.06%.  This is way up from 83.7% a year ago.  The district is proud of this five-year completer rate. This shows that even if a student is not able to graduate within four years of high school, when given supports and some extra time, they do graduate or earn a GED.

When we look at the district sub-group data in closer detail, we fully recognize we have areas of success as well as areas to improve.

Areas of success:

  • Low Socio-Economic Status Students: 76.67%, up from 75.7% a year ago.
  • Hispanic Students: 90%, up from 78.3% a year ago.
  • Five-year Cohort Completer Rate: 91.06%, up from 83.7%.

Areas of concern:

  • Students with Disabilities: 65.38%, down from 73% a year ago.
  • Native American Students: 53.57%, down from 78.10% a year ago.
  • Dropout rate: 3.62%, up from 3.1% a year ago.

We also look at specific school rates as we celebrate successes and try to replicate them in all schools. The Pendleton High School is having the best success in recent memory in getting students graduated. PHS’s outstanding graduation rates are a great tribute to the many hours of hard work our staff and community invest in our students.  Congratulations to all!

We recognize the need to focus on the programs and students at Hawthorne and Nixyaawii to better support their needs and strive for improvements.
