FFA Team Wins District Championship at Ag Event
A group of Pendleton High School FFA students competed in a District Ag Sales Career Development Event (CDE) at Echo High School on Friday, October 22, and earned the top spot. The Advanced Team won the District Championship, the Alternate Team won first place and the Beginning Team earned second place.
According to Marty Campbell, PHS Welding and Drafting Instructor and FFA Advisor, the Advanced Team will compete at the state level on November 20. “I am really proud of all our teams’ work and accomplishment at the event. The Advanced Team has ended up eighth in the state the last two years, so I am hoping we can get them slid up into the top spot this year!” Campbell said.
Ag Sales is an event where students develop a product and sell it. In addition, they participate in practicum areas such as customer relations, customer prospecting, advertising and telephone ordering. They also do a team event in which they are given a sales scenario and must develop a sales proposal as a team, and there is also a written test. According to Campbell, the career development event gives them the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real-world situation.
Campbell said students have worked with Kylee Hunt (PHS Ag Instructor and FFA Advisor) and him both during class and before and after school to prepare for the recent event. He said, “Some students have had the opportunity to work with the sales professionals with the actual companies they are representing in the CDE here at the National Convention, which has been fun to see.”
