Superintendent Message – February 23, 2021

I am proud to announce that our first day with elementary students back in our buildings went extremely well.  Thank you to all of our families for working with your child’s school to make this a smooth transition.  Some may ask, now that we are in Hybrid, how long will we remain on this schedule?  The answer hinges on three main variables, 1) the continuing decline of COVID cases in our county and/or within our zip code, 2) our ability to limit COVID exposure within our schools, and 3) at such time that the social distancing requirement of 35 square feet per student is reduced as the threshold for room capacity.  Over the next two weeks, we will monitor daily our elementary operations to ensure we are keeping our students and staff safe while at school.

The next question for many will be, “What about secondary students”?  Once we have completed two weeks with elementary students and we continue to meet the metrics and can demonstrate that our safety measures in place limit or eliminate the spread of COVID within our schools, we can entertain bringing our secondary students back using a Hybrid model as well.  I have attached our current plan that was shared a few weeks ago as a tentative timeline for implementation.  PSD Reopening Plan 8.0 Parents of secondary students (grades 6-12) will be receiving a survey in the near future.   We ask that you complete the survey for each secondary student in your household.  We will use this information to finalize our Hybrid plans and the logistics to implement the plan.

For those wondering about high school sports, we are operating under a modified schedule that is currently in Season 2.  Briefly, Season 2 includes sports that normally would compete in the fall, such as football, volleyball, cross country and soccer.  Season 3 sports are those that historically compete in the spring and include baseball, softball, and tennis. Season 4 sports are those that are known as “winter” sports, including basketball, swimming and wrestling.   OSAA Modified Seasons  Dance and cheer seasons run across seasons.  Whether any given sport can actually compete is dependent on the county COVID case rate levels and any special requirements for each sport as determined by either the Governor’s office or the Oregon Health Authority.  The following link contains a graphic that explains the allowable activities depending on the county’s risk level.  Sector Risk Level Guidance Chart  Please keep in mind that our ability to compete will be dependent upon the availability of transportation and officials.  Athletic schedules are subject to change and will be updated daily.

Our goal remains the same as it has for almost one year, that is to return all of our students and staff safely to our classrooms and buildings where they belong.  Thank you again to those of you who have contributed and supported us in this journey to that end.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,

Chris Fritsch
